Bernard G Browne Obituary

Bernard G. Browne, 93, of New York City, passed away at home on December 18, 2025. He was predeceased by his brother John and nieces Eileen and Carol and survived by his three nephews (Robert J., Thomas M. and Michael S. Browne), and their children.


Bernie was born on October 24, 1932, in Bronxville, New York, the younger of two sons of Thomas and Helen Browne.  After graduation from Iona Preparatory School in New Rochelle, New York, he attended Manhattan College in the Bronx. He was a Fulbright Fellow at the Free University of Berlin, 1957-1958, and pursued graduate studies in Political Science at the University of Notre Dame, obtaining the Ph.D. degree in 1968.


His professional life centered around the news and publishing industries. From 1963 to 1967 he wrote articles for the section “Perspective on the News” of Report magazine in New York City. In 1968, he was Executive Director of the German Language Section at the Democratic National Committee. And between 1972 and 1974 he was Editor of German American Trade News. For over 40 years Bernie worked for Scepter Publishers. It was through his work there as publisher, editor and translator, that he left his deepest mark. Additionally, for over 20 years he oversaw the production of the English version of Romana, the bulletin of the Opus Dei personal prelature.


Bernie was a man of deep faith. He had a gentle, cheerful personality and a capacity for steady work. Those who knew him will remember his perennial smile. He enlivened many family gatherings with his harmonica. He maintained a lifelong interest in languages, including German, Spanish and Esperanto.


Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 23, from 9:00–10:00 am at Murray Hill Place, 139 East 34th St., New York, NY.


A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Murray Hill Place on Tuesday, December 23 at 10:00 a.m. The burial will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 10 W. Stevens Ave, Hawthorne, NY 10532.
