Elminah Gordon (1925-2024)

Elminah Gordon, 98, of Riverdale, NY, died February 11, 2024. Ms. Gordon was born in Hanover Parish, Jamaica in 1925 to David and Eliza Gordon. After attending school there, she was a successful applicant in a competitive nurse’s aide program to secure work in the US. She emigrated in 1967, residing in New Rochelle NY and later Washington Heights, NYC. She worked as a nurse’s aide, nanny, and housekeeper for numerous families in and around Ridgewood, NJ for over 40 years, where she was universally beloved by her employers, their children, and the community. She became a US citizen in 1991 and referred to it as her proudest day. A deeply religious, moral standard-bearer, she was also deeply joyful, a fan of the New York Yankees, dancing, and any reason to enjoy a good joke or story. Her love knew no bounds and her humor, unwavering strength, and professionalism set straight all who knew her. In her last two years, at the Methodist Home for Nursing in Riverdale, she was affectionately known as ‘the Director,’ ‘the Ambassador,’ or the ‘staff nutritionist.’ Enormous thanks to Mary Lamasney of the St George’s Society of NYC, who partnered with Ms. Gordon in countless ways for over 20 years. Ms. Gordon was preceded in death by her parents and by her brothers, Aaron Gordon and Moses Gordon, and is survived by her first cousin Winefred G. Campbell of New Rochelle, NY, Ms. Campbell’s daughter Patricia Johnson of Mount Vernon, NY, nephew Sergeant of Police Anthony Gordon of Westmoreland Parish, Jamaica, cousins in Jamaica and NYC, and Carol Conyers and Olivia VanWagner whom she loved as daughters with other Conyers family members. Interment of cremation remains will be held later this spring at the Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn. Condolences may be shared at www. gannonfuneralhome.com Donations in her memory may be made to the St. George’s Society of NYC at https://www.stgeorgessociety.org.
