My family and I would like to express our deepest sympathy over the loss of Kenneth.
May you find comfort in your loving memories and the warmth of family and friends. A scripture that has uplifted many who have experienced such a loss, is found at Revelation 21:4. There it describes a time when death and pain will be gone forever. We will even see our loved ones again who we have lost in death (John 5:28 & 29). It is our hope that these words bring you a measure of comfort during this difficult time as well. Once again, please accept our condolences as you deal with your loss.

My condolences go out to the family and friends. It is never easy to cope with the loss of a loved one, and it is certainly a terrible struggle we all go through. But God does offer hope! At Revelations 21:3,4 God promises that death will be no more, all tears will be wiped from their eyes. Imagine what a wonderful time this will be! I hope this message leaves you with comfort in the times to come.

It takes a village to have met Kenneth Maddox. As a teen I wasn't sure which college to enroll. Why did I choose City College of NY? It was known as the proletariat Harvard. Through the late 60's, its admissions standards, so challenging its curriculum and so prestigious its degrees. The college has graduated ten Nobel Prize winners, one Fields Medalist, one Turing Award winner, three Pulitzer Prizes winners, and 3 Rhodes Scholars.
"Founded in 1847, City College was the first free public institution of higher education in the United States, an intellectual and economic equalizer at its time.
It is the oldest of CUNY's 24 institutions of higher learning, and is considered its flagship college, U.S. News & World Report in its 2016 rankings placed CCNY 85th among 620 Regional Universities in the North."
Among these alumni, the latest is a Bronx native, John O'Keefe (2014 Nobel Prize in Medicine), other famous alumni were Jonas Salk, discoverer of Polio vaccine.
In 1975, at 15, my assistant scoutmaster, Vincent Lee who was 25 at the time served as my big brother, my mentor, an example of who I needed to be for the journey as an adult, he was a City College graduate and was my Scouter.
As child of the 1970's I didn't have the best academic education, growing up in Chinatown, my elementary school, PS 23 was 95% Chinese, as first generation Chinese American, child of single parent, who mother was a seamstress making $20 a week, my upbringing was hard scrabble. Scouting became my social life and my savior in this immigrant community and part of America.
Open admissions at CUNY allowed me entry. The college during my tenure, in 1978-1984 had 10,000 students, however the Art dept had small classes and it was intimate.
Mervin Jules, former chair of CCNY Art Department, taught me the stock market, allowed me to meet the Artist world of Provincetown, Robert Motherwell, Raphel Soyer and photographer Joel Meyerowitz. Jacob Rothenberg chair took over from Professor Jules, was expert in Roman, Greek and classical art, Annie Shaver Crandell, Dorothy Knowles, Bill Behnken, Shong Moy, Betty O'Connor and Lester Krauss was part of the collective of professors who made sure I was fed, acquired the skill set to look at art as uninitiated. I learned to how to write, learned how to see and create through the history of art.Through Professor Maddox, I learned the Hudson River School was not a real school.
My major at first was photography, we didn't have a Bachelor's of fine arts program, I took all my electives in Art History, as a person who later diagnosed with ADD, I procrastinated and earned incomplete every semester, eventually I dropped out after 1984.
In fall 1987 I needed my Bachelor degree for my job at NYC's HPD. I return to school and took Kenneth's class in American Art, a 200 level class, it was enough to get my degree, and I got my promotion.
1990 marked a transition, I wanted to give back to my community I went back to True Light Lutheran Church, 150 the pack I grew up at nine, as a Cub scout and eventually the Troop as a Boy Scout. Tim Thom, Daniel Lee, Stephen Lushing, Tom Bain, Joseph Barone and others were my contemporaries. I'd met Kay Chow, who son Alan's Troop 521 was about to fold. Incidentally Kay, who was my banker at Citibank, brought Kevin and Brian Maddox to the troop. When Kenneth and Janet, showed up for a troop meeting, the social connection came full circle they became part of the family of 150.
I was glad to have passed on the knowledge of scouting to the sons of Kenneth Maddox, one of the professors who assisted me in completing my college education.
My life come full circle and I passed the torch.
Today as a result of people who helped me along as an adult. I am a successful member of society, a former photographer for my state housing agency Division of Housing and Community Renewal, a builder of affordable housing, and none of this would had happen if those were not involved in my life, I will be forever indebted. I conclude, I am deeply honored a graduate of the Harvard of the Proletariat, standing besides along side with CCNY Alumni Professor Maddox.
