Mary Michelle Iacono Obituary

On Wednesday morning, August 21st, 2024, Mary Iacono departed this world and went to Our Lord.  Mary was born March 14, 1937 in Manhattan, NYC, the daughter of Edmund and Lucy Iacono with twin sister, Nina.

As a child, she was an honors student and later excelled at St. Michael’s Academy. She helped her parents in the family business. In her 30’s,  She enrolled in Hunter College and earned a Bachelor of Psychology, a Bachelor’s in Education, and a Master’s in Education. Her entire tuition was paid with academic scholarships. She graduated Magna Cum Laude.

A follower of Christ, Mary devoted her life to helping others. She volunteered as a Eucharistic Minister, worked with special needs students and supported teachers in her district. Specializing in education, she taught hundreds of autistic children essential life-learning skills and helped them to become productive members of the community. She also volunteered as a union leader for the United Federation of Teacher's Union (UFT) and fought tirelessly for teachers’ rights. Although she never had children of her own, she was beloved by the hundreds of children that she trained in her 25 years of teaching.

Mary will be forever remembered by her family & friends. She is survived by her twin sister, Nina Iacono, niece Christine Patnude, and nephew David Iacono.
