Remembering The Things My Mother Told Me
Make sure you make really GOOD friends Sheril- She said
And I did maa - and you met them all...
She made really good friends too
And I know all of you.
Don't ever give anyone anything you wouldn't want for yourself Sheril,
It's better not to give anything at all...
And I never did.
THANK GOD for this and that - she always said
she said that a lot...
She was grateful and little things made her happy.
As a child I always asked where I came from -
She always said Browns town Market,
she said she paid 2&6 for me...
she always quoted the same price over the years -
it never changed,
While we always laughed about it -I'll admit I wondered...
sometimes...
Since I first moved away from home she would call periodically at night and say "
its 10 pm - do you know where your children are?"
I still have one such message saved on my answering machine- I saved lots of her messages...
While I always had the sense she considered me a "work-in-progress" she did tell me once -
"Sheril, you are my greatest accomplishment"
She said lots of things to me -
Never be a jealous person Sheril,
someone will always have more than you,
or something bigger and better than you -
and you will always be miserable...
"You can do anything you set your mind to" Sheril
"lower your voice - try"
"Sheril - you are an artist"
"Absolutely NO CURSING"
"put lotion on your feet"
"Temper your confidence Sheril- some people may not like you for it."
"Dress up when you feel down - wear bright colors"
"Smile and pretend you are having a good time"
"Stay close to your family, friends, and church"
She would start important declarations to me with the following words -
YOUR FATHER AND I -
Your Father and I have decided you should go to NYU,
your father and I don't want you to ride your bicycle to Staten Island any more,
your father and I this or that,
your father and I love you...
And... She always worried about me -
as she said to Rachel one day "to the point of paranoia"
But, My Mom had a special appreciation for my cranky side and gave me several nicknames to prove it - among them, Misery and Judge Judy.
She had other names too depending on the context, for example, she told her friend Pam that "Martha Stewart" was coming over when I had a planned visit.
SHE LOVED LIFE AND ALL ITS GIFTS-
"I want all my flowers while I'm alive" you said
And we did our best to give them to you
You loved to travel, and loved it just as much when I traveled...
As a child and young adult, you took me to the opera, films, plays, dance, Radio City Music Hall -
you widened my world
You used to have pets before me and dad - and when I asked "Maa- why don't you have pets now?
You said "Because I have you and your father"
She always made me laugh - she was truly funny
While doing my PhD - I went home for dinner and remarked how good a home cooked meal tasted and for most of the next year - my parents - who were still working, stopped at the market on the way home on Friday, cooked most of the day Saturday and came to my house with a weeks worth of food on Sunday until I graduated.
As most of you know, I never went to work on my ACTUAL birthdays, and mom always wanted to spend that day with me- we spent many such days together.
Periodically she would make deep heartfelt statements when she felt them-
Sheril - she would say on regular occasion- if I die tonight know that- I am happy, I am proud of you, I lived a good life, etc and it was always a happy thought or a matter of her gratefulness and her sense of peace.
Recently she said to a gathering of my friends and co-workers who were visiting her that "it warms a mother's heart to see you all around my daughter"
While looking in the mirror one day mom asked me: What's the sickness where you are skinny and think you are fat?
Anorexia? I answered.
yes... What's the opposite of that? she asked...
I don't know - why?
Because I'm fat but I think I'm beautiful...
And you sure were, inside and out.
During my mother's illness I would listen to a popular song
called "Wake Me Up When It's All Over" -
And these were the lyrics I felt most deeply
Wish that I could stay forever this young
Not afraid to close my eyes
So wake me up when it's all over
When I'm wiser and I'm older
The week before my mother died while driving home one day I herd this
- seemingly for the first time
Life's a game made for everyone
And love is the prize
and I've been a winner for 54 years and for that I'm grateful
Thank you mom,
I love you

St. Augustine on a final conversation with his mother, Monica, on the day of her death:
"Alone with eachother, we talked very intimately. Forgetting the past and reaching forward to what lies ahead ... The conversation led us towards the conclusion that the pleasure of the bodily senses, however delightful in the radiant light of this physical world, is seen by comparison with the life of eternity to be not even worth considering. Our minds were lifted up by an ardent affection towards eternal being itself. Step by step we climbed beyond all corporeal objects and the heaven itself, where sun, moon, and stars shed light on earth. We ascended even further ... But we sighed and left behind us the first fruits of the Spirit bound to that higher world, we returned to the noise of our human speech where a sentence has both a beginning and an ending."
As those we love ascend at last to this region of inexhaustible abundance, the loss of their life, the loss of their bodies, becomes the death of us still living. I have survived this death thus far by recalling those moments where the connection between my mother and me was beyond the body. And once again, albeit temporarily, through remembering, I have climbed with her to that region where everything is love and every sentence is silent.
We will always grieve the death of our mothers, but our memory of them, I hope, bridges the distance with more beauty than pain.
- with all my love and with my deepest condolences.

A tribute to Shirley from the Antonio family in Canada. The day after Shirley died, my daughter, Karen, sent an email to her mother (Mary) and me, enclosing two beautiful photos of Shirley. They were taken at her house on Shirley's last visit to Toronto in 2009 on the occasion of the celebration of my 70th birthday. The subject on the email, which incidentally was also copied to her siblings (Roger and Wayne) read: "One Classy Lady" The narrative simply said: "Thought you would like to have these - a beautiful person inside and out". Not much more needs to be said! That's what our family thought of Shirley. She was very dearly loved by all of us and we will miss her terribly. God bless you Shirley and may you rest in peace.
