I met "Alex" via our mutual friend, Michael Fagan, during military service in Fűrth/Bay Germany in 1962. We used to frequent a little jazz cellar in old Nűrnberg called the 'Serifé'. Good music and beer, and putting the army behind, 'Shaundor' (far more mellifluous than "Alex") added a keen and unique ability to find irony and humor in any situation. Just knowing Sandor might be the reason Michael and I wanted to visit Hungary, and he gave us rudimentary language lessons; unfortunately at that time our travel request was denied. Sandor had a classmate from Monmouth, Gisela, who was attending the University in Marburg/Lahn. Our trip there in my '48 Mercedes was an adventure in itself, which I am sorry not to be able to reminisce with my old friend. But I am glad to learn he left five of himself behind to enrich the world. Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss.

I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family for the loss of your loved one. May God almighty father of tender mercies and all comfort continue to comfort you all (2 Corinthians 1: 3, 4). Please know that God has promised to completely remove death, tears, mourning, outcry and pain (Revelation 21:4). Indeed we all eagerly anticipate the fulfillment of these promise. The Bible also provides assurance of a real hope of reuniting with our dead loved ones in the coming new world (John 5: 28, 29). At a time like this the Bible is a true source of comfort and you can read it online and also learn further about God's purposes at www.jw.org

Sandor was my brother in law in the late 60's and most of the 70's.
I always enjoyed the brief times I spent with him. He was a kind, gentle and brilliant soul.
Judging from other comments here I am not alone in my memories.
May he rest in peace.

Please accept my deep condolences. I live in the building and just found out the sad
news from George last night.
Sandor , as you know, was a great soccer fan. When I returned from the World Cup in
Brazil, we had our longest conversation, barely mentioning books. We both had seen
almost all the matches and discussed several in detail, especially Mexico and Holland.
When I would go to Brazil, I usually would carry a book or two from Sandor. He has a
book of mine now ( it is hard to think of Sandor in the past) ,and I still have one of his
by Houellebecq.
Our last conversation in front of the Kips Bay theater was cut short and we agreed that
I would slide my phone number inside his mail box ,and we could meet at the Gemini and
talk further. I waited three or four days to do this ,and as I now know this was around the time that Sandor passed away. I am sorry that I waited those three or four precious days.
You have my heartfelt sympathy for your loss.

I was fortunate to have been Sandor's customer and colleague during my career. Regardless of which side of the desk you might be on, Sandor's fierce devotion to the book, the reader and all in between did not waiver. He was a gentle man. He was one of a kind.

For a time I was technically Sandor's boss at Little, Brown/Time Warner but we all know how that really went. He knew exactly what to do, when to do it and he did it better than anyone I've ever known. There was never anything I ever had to ask him to do because he was always a step ahead of all of us. Sandor was a beautiful person - funny, brilliant, caring and a great lover of books. He was truly one of a kind and the book world will never be quite the same.

i am so sad to read the news of the loss of the most wonderful Sandor. I will continue to hold forever my joy at having known him. he was a Gentleman, old school in all the best ways. He knew his books, he knew his people, he found pleasure in all of it. He twirl me on the dance floor, give me a pinch & a winch, and then talk like the most knowledgable & engaging Sunday morning news host on any topic. Our world is far,far smaller today without him. Godspeed dollface, Godspeed.

To the Szatmari family I am so very sorry for your loss. I worked with Sandor from 1994 - 2003 and was so very fond of him. His knowledge of books was so vast, his love of life was infectious, and his stories would keep you at the water cooler for longer than you should be there. May you all find comfort in each other as you honor his days on earth.

My deepest condolences to the Szatmari family. I met Sandor when I was a buyer at B&T back in the early 90's. He was a mentor, an inspiration and always a gentleman....a true mensch.
I was a book person, but I was new to the Buying department, and he taught me so much about the buying process and the art of the sales call. He could easily charm his way through any tough sell-in. I always looked forward to seeing him. Not only did we discuss books, but we talked endlessly about history and great films, especially Truffaut's 400 Blows. He had a profound effect on my career, both at B&T and Warner and I definitely am where I am now due in large part to those early years working with him, and I will always be very thankful for that.
May his memory be a blessing.

To Sandors Family, I am a fellow sales person at Little, Brown and Hachette Book Group and attended many a sales conference with Sandor. I always remember that if Sandor had something to say the room went quiet. We all knew that he was imparting another piece of wisdom or secret of bookselling. I know that by listening to Sandor, I would become a better salesperson. He was a very kind and gentle man and will be truly missed. My heartfelt condolences to you all.

To the Szatmari family -- the news only came to me today that my old friend and colleague, Sandor, has left us. We worked together at Little, Brown (I left in 2004, not long before his retirement), and I learned so much from him. What a gentleman he was! And so passionate about books, and his customers. I just wanted to express my condolences and let you know that he made a grand impression on everyone he met. He was a wonderful sales person, a true book lover, and an honorable man. I loved his stories. I can JUST picture him in my office from that era, or at a sales meeting, or simply seeing him in the halls at the office. Sending you my deepest condolences...

Sandor was a hero to all of us at Little, Brown during his years there. He deployed irresistible warmth, intellect, persistence and charm to bring our books and writers into the world. I loved him--his warm handshake, his handsome attire (he always dressed beautifully!) the smile he led every conversation with, his filibustering ability to keep talking about a book until the buyer gave up and gave the order he wanted.
B&N's fiction buyer told me that at B&N they called Sandor "the mayor" because of how he filled up the place with his presence. In his later years, it was wonderful to see him pass along his secrets to the younger sales execs.
Sandor's mark is still on all of us who work in books at Little, Brown and Hachette Book Group. He helped deliver us into the modern era of publishing, and the standards and approaches he modeled are those we uphold still. I'm happy and grateful to have known him, and I send my love and condolences to his wonderful family.

The news of Sandor's passing comes as a shock to me. Sandor sold me when he was at Little, Brown. He was one of the most thoughtful readers and a skilled salesman. He had a flair for storytelling, was able to speak about virtually any subject (even if he was wrong, he would still make it sound like he knew what he was talking about!). Everyone I know in the publishing industry has a Sandor story to tell and everyone I know will miss him dearly. My sympathies to the Szatmari family. - Edward Ash-Milby
